PTEROSTYLIS (Ptst.) (Greenhoods)

These asily grown, fast multiplying terrestrials are an excellent choice for growers wanting to gain experience with Australian deciduous terrestrials. The flowers are insect traps that have irritable tongues. It is great fun to trigger the tongues which snap shut in an instant. The tongue resets again after 30-90 minutes. Hybrids are vigorous and flower more freely than the species. Most greenhoods prefer 50-70% shade. They will grow in a wide variety of mixes. We use standard mix. Greenhoods respond to folia feeding in the early growth stages. They grow best if repotted into fresh mix each year. The easily grown species multiply at rates up to 5:1 each year and soon form extensive colonies. The cauline group flower in Autumn on stems with no rosette, just a few small stem leaves, while non flowering plants have a rosette of leaves flat on the ground.
